The Need
The Background
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) Fuel Efficiency team (Green Team) worked with more than 100 airlines worldwide and identified better management of the APU as the most significant opportunity to save fuel. Leadership from this team developed APUTRAC to address the critical issues driving APU fuel waste.
The Current Reality
At best, some airlines download APU run data after an aircraft lands and analyze this historical information. This is too late and does not support proactive management of the APU operation. Additionally, there is no means to immediately capture the root cause of the misuse in order to continuously improve performance.
The Opportunity
When the aircraft is parked remotely or in a maintenance area, there is often no clear assignment of responsibility for the APU operation. This presents a substantial potential for eliminating waste. Much of the waste occurs when the avionics are not powered, and aircraft reporting is not available. This is where APUTRAC provides substantial value in lowering operating costs.
